Waste collection strikes across South Ayrshire will go ahead from today (August 24) after Unite the Union rejected an eleventh hour pay offer increase from Cosla.

An initial two per cent pay increase was knocked back, before a 3.5 per cent rise was also turned down.

Last night, Unite confirmed that it had said no to a third offer of a five per cent increase, meaning the strikes will go ahead as planned from today in 13 council areas in Scotland.

The 13 councils join Edinburgh who have been on strike since last week.

South Ayrshire's collection services will be affected until next Wednesday, August 31 (inclusive).

Residents are asked not to present their recycling trolley during the week of the industrial action. They should save their recycling and present it bagged with their trolley on the next scheduled collection day.

Household waste bins and garden waste bins should be presented as normal, however these services may also be affected.

A South Ayrshire Council statement said: "During this period, we won't be collecting the following household bins: paper/card/cardboard (grey bin), plastics/metals/cartons (blue bin), glass (purple lidded bin), garden waste (brown bin), Food waste (silver caddy).

"We will concentrate on collecting your general waste (green bins/ green lidded bins) throughout the industrial action.

"If you have a scheduled green bin / green lidded bin collection from Wednesday 24 August until Thursday 1 September, please put your bin out for collection as normal, and we will endeavour to collect it on your scheduled day.

"Please leave it out until it is collected. From 1 September, please put your bins out as normal."
