Ayr Advertiser: Jim Scott was appointed fire service area manager for Ayrshire

AYRSHIRE’S new top fireman pledged that the public wouldn’t notice a difference in service after the creation of a single force.

Jim Scott, 47, was appointed as Area Manager for all three Ayrshire counties - building on 24 years of service in Fire and Rescue in the west of Scotland.

Now based at Ardrossan, he has also served a stint at Cumnock Community Fire Station as deputy commander for Strathclyde and also was the first station manager at Kilmarnock Fire Station.

He now has responsibility for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service across Ayrshire after the new single force came into being on April 1 2013 but the new area manager believes that this should not affect their level of service.

He said: “There shouldn’t be any noticeable difference to the public. If somebody needs our services, whether in an emergency or not, there will be the same level of service as it was when we were eight fire and rescue divisions so you still pick up the phone and dial 999 and you will get the same response.”

The project was funded from South Ayrshire’s Cultural Rucksack programme which brought highly skilled professional partners to work with children and young people in schools and exhibited the results at Rozelle.

Meanwhile, fun in the sun frizzled into meltdown as violence erupted on Ayr Beach after 25,000 people descended onto the sand.

As families flocked to the beach to play peacefully, at least one major fight broke out, leaving a man in hospital after being stabbed with glass.

Ayr Police poured away £700 of booze they confiscated on Saturday after onlookers described the behaviour of yobs as disgusting.

Three people received tickets for urinating on the beach while another 18 got tickets for street drinking.

Three people were arrested for causing disorder on the beach while another two were caught for possessing knives on streets near the esplanade.

Inspector Sean Mangan, from Police Scotland in Ayr, said: “There will always be a few who come to town and want to fight but we have officers in place to deal with that and that is what we did.”
