A group of S4 Carrick Academy pupils completed a Columba 1400 leadership course. This inspired them to lead a community initiative to try to help tidy up Maybole, filling 30 bags of rubbish in October 2013.
An initiative to tackle litter bugs in Ayr was described as “a great success”. The scheme saw South Ayrshire Council and Police Scotland partnering during a joint litter enforcement day in Ayr town centre in October 2013.
Ex-serviceman Frank Maguire, from Ayr, was selected for the Great Britain team to compete at the World Para Archery championships. Frank had been left disabled after a bomb attack in Northern Ireland when he served with the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
The Scottish Government was in talks to save Prestwick Airport. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced plans to take public ownership of the airport, saving around 1,400 jobs. The airport had been on the market since March 2012 while the Scottish Government, in partnership with Scottish Enterprise and South Ayrshire Council, worked with owners Infratil to help find a private buyer, to no avail.
A £million project to modernise and extend Barrhill Primary in Carrick got underway. The work was expected to be completed by May 2014.
Pupils at Girvan Primary School took part in a lantern covering workshop in October 2013. The workshop, run by Carrick Rural Arts Group (CRAG) gave P5s the opportunity to get involved in the Carrick Festival of Light.
