FIRE crews are currently battling a blaze in Ayr.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) have confirmed that they are currently in attendance at a "large fire" which has been reported on the town's High Street.

The Advertiser have been informed that eight appliances are currently at the scene after the fire broke out earlier this evening, Tuesday, December 12.

Businesses have also taken to social media that the street has been closed as a result of the blaze.

While further images on social media have shown emergency crews use appliances to battle the blaze over buildings at the top of nearby Alloway Street.

It is not yet clear what building or buildings have been affected by the fire, though accounts at the scene suggested the blaze may have happened behind the Arran Mall and Hourstons building.

It is the second large fire to affect the town in recent times, after the iconic Station Hotel was ravaged by a blaze at the end of September.

There have been no injuries reported so far.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 8.25pm on December 12 to reports of fire on Ayr High Street.

“Operation control has mobilised six fire appliances and two height appliances and firefighters are in attendance.

“There are no reports of casualties at this time.”

It's understood that Alloway Street, Kyle Street, High Street and Dalblair Road are all closed to traffic this morning (Wednesday) as a result of the fire.
